Does anyone else have trouble with handles?
Have watched quite a few videos on pulling handles. Then, re-watched these videos. The technique seems pretty easy. Still, just to be on the safe side --
Yep! You guessed it. Watched those handle-pulling videos again.
Even took a seminar once where the instructor demonstrated pulling handles.
So it ought to be a piece of cake, right?
Durn it. Mine turn out clunky.
They are too thick.
Or too thin.
One side's higher than the other.
They're crooked.
They warp in the middle.
Or have ridges.
They're too round.
Or too flat.
It's pretty safe to say: xx Even the thought of pulling handles fills me with an emotionally charged, blood and thunder condition of hypertension.
So last night, just before news time at 5:30pm, when a brilliant inspiration slipped into my consciousness, i jumped right up and raced to the pottery room. Couldn't wait to throw a cup. Wanted to try out this new, keen-witted plan. It was a clever design concept which would totally bypass my lack of ability and skill in creating handles !!!
Except . . . .
It doesn't work.
Darn! I was just sure my muddleheaded dilemma of forming handles was solved forever.
Here's the scoop. Throw the cup.
After it's formed, cut two slits in the clay.
Form the clay between the slits into a handle -- an organic extension of the cup itself.
Here's the result: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ah sure now, it's back to the drawing board on this one.
Happy handles everyone

I think it does work, Chae - I really like it a lot! It's like a cup with a little attitude.
On the subject of pulling handles - you know it's my least favorite studio chore. I've tried different things including buying a handle tool (looks sort of like a trimming tool). The guild has an extruder that I'm going to try using. There's a handle die. We'll see...
I wish I could help :(
Cynthia
Glad to hear i'm not alone in this. An extruder makes sense. Now that you mention it, i vaguely remember reading where someone was using an extruder to do handles.
Let me know how it works for you with the guild's extruder.
In the meantime, i'll do some research on what products are "out there" and see what i can find.
Jafa -- I know you'd have some great ideas on this if you did pottery. We'll just have to get you into clay, that's all !!!

Nice!
Sue !
Hello dear friend !!!
You and Cynthia see something here that escapes me.
Think the concept of "organic" handles was ok. But . . . .
It just doesn't *work* for me. Hate to admit this, but am trying for a generic handle. One that is well-proportioned and pleasing to the holder's hand.
Glad to see you stopped by and it was grand to be able to touch base with you.

Thanks for you nice comment about my handles. I have a youtube video on handles, but mine ended up just being about attaching it to the mug. Pulling a handle is a bit ... well ... humorous/obscene.
I like how you've solved the handle issue ... your mug is cool and most people (even myself) wrap their hand around the cup anyway.
Love your work!
Thank you Natalie
Your handles are so excellent !!! Wish i could get mine to resemble the graceful lines you've developed. Am still working on it.
Hugs
